Welcome to Fermentation Made Simple — a beginner-friendly guide to making sauerkraut, kimchi, pickles, kombucha, fermented hot sauce and more, right in your own kitchen.
Why this site exists
Fermentation can feel intimidating when you’re just starting out. Salt ratios, strange bubbles, that white film on top — it’s easy to worry you’ve done something wrong. This site exists to take the guesswork out of it. Every recipe is written for a complete beginner: clear steps, no specialty equipment you don’t need, and honest guidance on what’s normal and what isn’t.
What you’ll find here
- Step-by-step recipes for the most popular ferments
- Plain-English basics: equipment, salt ratios, and food safety
- Troubleshooting guides for when something looks off
- Honest buyer’s guides for the few tools that actually help
Who’s Behind It
Hi, I’m Robert. I go by a pen name here rather than my full identity, but everything on this site — every recipe, every fix, every “wait, is this normal?” answer — comes from years of actually doing this in my own kitchen, not from copying what other sites say.
I didn’t grow up fermenting anything. A coworker handed me a jar of homemade kimchi one day, mostly as a joke about how bland my lunch looked, and that was it — I was hooked. I went home that weekend, butchered my first batch of sauerkraut (way too salty, barely fermented, still ate the whole jar), and just kept going from there. Kimchi is still what I make most, and I’ve lost count of how many variations I’ve tried since that first jar.
What kept me fermenting wasn’t just the food — it was how little of it made sense from the guides I found online. Half of them assumed I already knew what a “kahm yeast” was. The other half buried the one thing I actually needed (how much salt?) under a life story. So this site is the resource I wish I’d had: the short version, the actual amounts, and an honest answer when something in your jar looks weird and you just want to know if you should worry or not.
No specialty equipment pushed on you, no exaggerated claims, no guessing. Just what’s worked, batch after batch, in a regular kitchen.
